Standard 7
Title: Lesson Planning
Date: 9/17/2012 – 12/7/2012
Artifact Description:
My artifact for this experience includes a lesson plan that I wrote to teach reading and phonics skills to a student who is in third grade, but reads at a first grade level.
Alignment
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment
I believe this experience best aligns with standard seven of the Wisconsin Standards Teacher Development and Licensure Standards which states: “The teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community, and curriculum goals.” This lesson plan demonstrates my ability to plan instruction based on an individual learner’s needs. I created my lesson plan to adapt to the student’s reading level and interests. The lesson was taught in a one-on-one setting where we worked on his spelling words with flash cards and read the book “One, Two, Three, Kick!” This student benefited from hands on learning and practice with foundational reading skills.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Statement Alignment
I believe this experience best aligns with KSD1.c. of the UWP School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition statements which states: “The candidate can establish clearly written goals that reflect the curriculum framework and standards, and can articulate high expectations that permit viable methods of assessment and account for varying learning needs and styles, and prior knowledge. My lesson contains outcomes which reflect the standards I was teaching for during my lesson. My lesson was adapted for the student who struggled with reading. I had previously worked with this student so I used flash cards and an individual white board with him because he benefits from using those materials.
Secondary Alignment:
KS1.d: Demonstrates Knowledge of Resources
KS1.e: Designs Coherent Instruction
Reflection
What I learned about teaching/learning:
I learned to have clear and concise lesson plans that layout what I plan to teach during my lesson. I learned to plan more material rather than less because it is easier to cut out material than it is to add material when you run out of things to teach. During my lesson I learned that students learn differently and I need to know my students in order to effectively teach material that will benefit my students.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
I learned that I enjoy creating lesson plans that will engage my students and pique their interests. I enjoyed finding ways to help my student’s think independently and creatively. I learned that creating lesson plans is about making the material meaningful for students. As I worked on lessons I thought of ways that my students could use what they learn for their future endeavors.
