Standard 6
Title: BEE Binder (bring everything every day)
Date: 12/2/2013
Artifact Description:
My artifact for this experience includes photos of each component of the BEE Binder. I use the BEE Binder in the first grade classroom at Pecatonica Elementary. The BEE Binder is an organizational tool that stands for “bring everything every day.” The BEE Binder includes a cover page with rules and a page that lists the contents of the binder. There are compartments and folders for a calendar, homework, return to school, important information, keep at home, reading log, and spelling words. There is also a zip up bag that parents can put things in for the teacher such as notes and permissions slips. The back of the BEE Binder contains a behavior chart that students use to record their behavior on a daily basis.
Alignment
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment
I believe the BEE Binder best aligns with standard six of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards which states: “The teacher uses effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques as well as instructional media and technology to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.” The BEE Binder is a great way to communicate with parents because it goes home every day. The BEE Binder can be adapted for any age of learner. The BEE Binder teaches students how to be organized not only in first grade but all the way up through high school. In my classroom I will use the BEE Binder in conjunction with edmodo.com because it offers a concrete form of communication as well as an online form of communication that is very easy to use. The BEE Binder prepares students for what is taking place in the classroom, which allows students time to think about a project and to inquire with students, teacher, and parents to learn more about the project. Students are also able to communicate with one another about what is taking place that day or even next week.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Statement Alignment
I believe this artifact best aligns with KSD4.c. of the UWP School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Statements which states: “The candidate is able to provide, frequent, sensitive and appropriate information to parents and students about students’ positive and negative progress within the instructional program and successfully engages families in the educational process when appropriate.” Using the BEE Binder in the first grade classroom at Pecatonica Elementary allowed me to communicate with parents in such a way that eased concerns of students, parents, and teacher. I use the behavior chart on the back of the BEE Binder to praise good behavior and to discuss inappropriate behavior. I ask students why their behavior color is not where it should be and how we can make it better tomorrow. On Fridays a newsletter goes home in the BEE Binder that updates families on what we did that week and what we will be doing the following week.
Secondary Alignment:

KSD4.e: Grows and Develops Professionally
Reflection
What I learned about teaching/learning:
I learned that communication is very important to families of your students. When all parties know what is taking place in the classroom everybody feels at ease. Teaching is more enjoyable and students take part in the learning process much more successfully when they know what is going to happen next. I learned that most young learners learn better when they can see and touch something. Using the BEE Binder has helped me as a teacher be more organized as well as students.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
I learned that I will use the BEE Binder in my future classroom no matter the grade level. I feel that the binder makes me a more effective teacher because it allows me to communicate with parents every day and in turn allows parents to communicate with their children. Communication is such an important part of teaching and with the BEE Binder I can make all families a part of their children’s learning.
