Artifact Description:
My artifact is an introductory letter that I will send home to parents of my future students. The letter includes background information about me and my beliefs. Goals and expectations I have for all students are also included in the letter. My artifact is designed to communicate with parents by explaining who I am and what they should expect out of me as a teacher. I wrote my letter to reflect my teaching personality.
Alignment
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment
I believe this experience best aligns with standard ten of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards which states: “The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support pupil learning and well-being and acts with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner.” My teacher communication letter aligns with standard ten because I created communication with my parents and students. This letter will allow me to foster relationships with parents as well as students. My colleagues will also be sent this letter to learn more about me as a teacher. I will support pupil learning by being excited for learning every day and creating a positive atmosphere of trust, creativity, and togetherness. My letter states that students will be excited for learning and display appropriate behavior. It also states that students will learn through me and my actions. I will model behavior that is expected of the students. I will communicate with parents to help all students have the best chance for success. This letter is an example of collaboration between parents, students, and teacher. We will all work together beginning with this letter, to strive for the ultimate goal which is to give all students the best possible education.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Statement Alignment
I believe this experience best aligns with KSD4.c. of the UWP School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition statements which states: “The candidate is able to provide frequent, sensitive and appropriate information to parents and students about students' positive and negative progress within the instructional program and successfully engages families in the educational process when appropriate.” My teacher communication letter is an example of how I will communicate with families. My letter immediately creates a connection with families that will allow me to communicate positive, negative, and sensitive information to families knowing that I have their child’s best interest in mind. My letter will contain the name of each student which lets the students know that I know their name and care about all of them. This letter is an important beginning step in communicating with families.
Secondary Alignment:
KS3.a: Communicates Clearly and Accurately
Reflection
What I learned about teaching/learning:
I learned that it is important to immediately create a line of communication with parents and students so everyone has an understanding of the teacher and the rules and expectations he/she has. I also learned that creating a warm and friendly letter will allow you to be more approachable by parents and students.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
I learned that I will use this letter when I begin student teaching to communicate with parents and students. Professors and classmates who read this letter felt that it was welcoming and honest. I learned that communication is critical as a future teacher. Parents will work with you if they know that you believe in yourself and love what you do. Having a positive attitude is important in creating and maintaining relationships with parents and students.
