Title: Developmental Assessment
Date: 12/6/12
Artifact Description:
My artifact for this experience is a developmental assessment of a student in third grade that I worked with during my pre-student teaching. This artifact describes how the student learns best and interacts with his peers. The assessment also describes his home life and the struggles he has endured. My artifact suggests instruction that I would provide the student in the future.
Alignment
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment
I believe this experience best aligns with standard two of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards which states: “The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social, and personal development.” My developmental assessment aligns with standard two because when working with this child I had to provide instruction that was appropriate to his ability. Some days he performed well. On other days I had to change my instruction because he was not able to complete his usual tasks. In the classroom there were students that were above grade level, average, and below grade level. The student I worked with was way behind all his classmates and had no support at home. I created a relationship with this student, in which he trusted and confided in me. As the semester progressed he began to understand the difference between consonants and vowels. I used that information to begin teaching him about rhyming and syllables. I understood that he was growing intellectually and provided instruction to challenge him and teach him a new aspect of reading.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Statement Alignment
I believe this Experience best aligns with KS3.c. of the UWP School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition statements which states: “The candidate has the ability to engage students in the learning process by linking appropriate content, based upon suitable instructional materials and resources, to students' knowledge and experience, being certain that all students are cognitively engaged in the activities/assignments and that the students actively contribute to the content design. Instruction is highly coherent and appropriately paced for all students and allows for reflection and closure as appropriate.” During my assessment of this student I thought about what worked and what did not. I learned to create lessons that met the standards I was teaching towards, along with using materials that he would understand. My assessment of this student explains how I linked his interests to lessons in order to make him interested in the material. I also gave the student options. When the student was doing well or having a bad day, I gave him choices and let him determine the focus of that day. The material was always relevant for the student’s learning needs. The student had say in what he was learning which will help him think independently in the future.
Secondary Alignment:
KSD4.b: Maintains Accurate Records
KSD2.a: Creates an Environment of Respect and Rapport

What I learned about teaching/learning:
I learned that it is important to assess your students not only in the classroom, but in other aspects of their life as well. The student I worked with had many other factors affecting his learning that I had to take into account when writing a developmental assessment. I learned that it is difficult for students to have enthusiasm for learning when they have issues at home. As a teacher I tried to create a relationship with this student that was professional and friendly at the same time. I wanted the student to have fun and enjoy working with me. I learned that teaching involves caring for your students to help them develop into the person they can be.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
I learned that I will work with students that will not always have the best situations. I realized that caring for a student is sometimes what that student really needs. I learned in order to help students develop I must be patient and find ways to help them in the classroom. Students may not get help at home, so it is important to show that you care about them and want them to grow academically and as an individual.
